Local resident participates in OFTC Nursing pinning ceremony.

(Photo courtesy news release.) Oconee Fall Line Technical College held a pinning ceremony for practical nursing students December 9 on the Dublin campus. According to a release, the 20 students participating was the largest cohort in OFTC history. Among them was Cochran resident Irianna Moss. The ceremony is held each December to mark the completion of the educational requirements needed for graduates to sit for the state board licensure examination and to welcome them into the nursing profession. The original ceremony dates back to the Crusades, when members of the Knight Hospitallers were honored with Maltese crosses after caring for wounded soldiers. In the 1860s, Florence Nightingale continued the tradition by recognizing students who completed nursing training with pins. Moss was one of two students who got to address her classmates during the ceremony. She is pictured with fellow pin recipients as well as OFTC instructors Logan Williamson, Scott Grey, and Kerrie Fountain.

(Photos courtesy Bleckley County Schools Facebook page.) CAPE Environmental Management recently selected the Royal Reader, the literacy promoting bus operated by Bleckley County Schools, to receive a grant. The Royal Reader was chosen because of the positive impact it has on the community. Getting the grant for the Reader was CAPE employees, Greg and Janie Cahill. Jainie Cahill was quoted in the Facebook post announcing the donation saying, “The bus makes a positive influence on literacy and the youth of Bleckley County. Supporting young readers felt like a natural and important way to make a difference close to home.”
