Georgia Forestry Commission visits Bleckley Pre-K.

(Courtesy BleckleyProgress.com contributor.) Students at Bleckley Pre-K enjoyed a visit from Gabe Outlaw and Smokey Bear with the local Georgia Forestry Commission August 29. The pair visited classes and talked with the students about fire safety, the difference between good fires and bad fires, and how to prevent forest fires. Students watched a video, A Day in the Forest with Smokey, to help them understand and reinforce the five forest fire safety rules: 1) Only you can prevent wildfires; 2) Always be careful with fire; 3) Never play with matches or lighters; 4) Always watch your campfire; and 5) Make sure your campfire is completely out before you leave. Each student had the opportunity to give Smokey a high-five, a fist bump, or a hug and pledged not to play with matches or fire. Several students wore shirts in support of Smokey Bear and the celebration of his 75th birthday. Many thanks to Mr. Outlaw, Smokey, and the Georgia Forestry Commission for visiting Bleckley Pre-K and helping educate our students on preventing forest fires.

GDOT to restrict construction-related lane closures for Labor Day weekend.

Because of expected heavy traffic this Labor Day weekend, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced that construction-related lane closures on interstate highways as well as major state routes that directly serve key tourist and recreation centers would be suspended from August 30 at noon until September 3 at 5 am. A release reminds motorists that crews still may work in proximity to highways and some long-term lane closures could remain in place due to safety concerns.
